We tend to separate “real” and “digital” worlds. Yet, the boundaries are blurring rapidly and perhaps we tend to build unnecessary artificial boundaries. Can the digital world offer experiential learning opportunities? How can we connect two worlds in a healthy and meaningful way?
Taking some inspiration from scholars, such as Paulo Freire and Marshall McLuhan and practical examples of youth work and training examples, you will delve into exploring present experiences and futures to make.

"The Future is already here - it is just not evenly distributed", William Gibson

Workshop activities:

Hello everyone, and welcome to our interactive workshop!
Today, we're diving deep into the challenges faced by young people and exploring futuristic solutions with the help of AI. Ready? Let's dive in!

Here's what I invite you to do in this session:

Step 1:
Firstly, find yourself in teams of 3-4 members.
You'll be collaborating closely, so feel free to team up with those you resonate with or are curious to work with!

Step 2:
Once in a team, reflect on, share and choose a significant problem, challenge, or barrier young people you engage with are currently confronting.
We're searching for real, pressing issues brought by new media and technology, so take a moment to deeply consider this.

Step 3:
Using the ChatGPT platform or similar, you'll craft a fictional story set 5-10 years in the future.
Imagine a young individual, much like those you work with, overcoming this challenge.
Keep it within 350 words to make sure it's concise yet impactful.

Step 4:
Next, you'll head to any of the AI image generators to create two visuals:
  • One that portrays a typical young person dealing with the problem in the present.
  • The other captures them having overcome the issue in the future.
Think about how you want AI to visualise this transformation.

Step 5:
Time permitting, you'll use a special AI video tool.
Imagine interviewing this young individual, asking them five questions about their journey from facing the problem to finding a solution.

Watch this example of an AI-generated video of a young person talking about mental health to adult audiences.

Finally, it's sharing time! We're not just presenting outcomes here - the process, your thoughts, decisions, and any challenges encountered are equally important. Reflection is key.

Alright, innovative minds, let's blend the power of human insight with AI's capabilities. I'm excited to see what stories and solutions emerge. Let's get digital!

Reflection time:

As we journey through today's workshop, it's essential to pause and reflect. Let's delve deeper into our experience.
  • First, how did using AI shape your understanding or perspective of the problem?
  • Secondly, were there any elements in the AI-generated outputs that took you by surprise?
  • Looking ahead, how do you envision incorporating these future-oriented storytelling techniques when working with our youth?
And lastly, as we embrace AI tools, what limitations or considerations should we be mindful of?

AI tools and platforms used to plan, prepare, facilitate and reflect learning:
  • ChatGPT to elaborate on the workshop activities plan and reflection questions, write a script for an AI-generated video, make the badge description;
  • Synthesia.io platform to generate videos using AI-enhanced avatars and content;
  • Participants chose to use their preferred AI-powered platform to generate texts, images and videos

Holding the "AI-Future YOUth" badge means I've stepped into the shoes of today's youth, understanding their digital challenges. In a relaxed workshop, I joined a team, discussing real issues our young folks face. Using tools like ChatGPT, we imagined possible solutions and how the future might look. I tried my hand at creating visuals that show the now and the hopeful tomorrow. With AI, we also brainstormed stories, thinking about the journeys young people might take. Most importantly, we took moments to reflect on AI's impact, its benefits, and its limits, thinking about how we can better connect and support our youth in a tech-driven world.
